Apple suppliers step up iPhone 5 production

iPad 3 parts also being prepared

Since the launch of iOS 5 and the non-appearance of the iPhone 5, all has been quiet in regard to Apple's next generation smartphone. Until now that is.

According to the DigiTimes, Taiwan-based companies included in the supply chain for Apple products have begun to prepare materials for the production of both the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3. The latter being somewhat surprising, as it's not expected until around March or April 2012. Unless the device is being brought forward a little. There was a rumour of it landing before Christmas – the news from the Far East certainly adds weight to this. Don't add it to your Christmas list just yet, but if you fancy an iPad upgrade, you might want to sit tight and see what happens. If it does appear, it's likely to have the high-res Retina display that was half-expected in the last Apple tablet.

But before then, we should see an iPhone 5. DigiTimes claims the iPhone 5 is looking good for a September launch, with a shelf date of October based on the supplier information. The sources pointed out that Apple has been planning the new iPhone for some time, while the iPad 3 has just recently been added to the production schedule, with both down to be produced in small volumes in August. 'Volume' production is down for September and October.

If you love your Apple gear, now might be a good time to start saving. You'll need plenty of cash to stay an early adopter.

Samsung Galaxy S II sells 3 million

Just two months after its release, it's Samsung's fastest-selling phone ever

We loved the Samsung Galaxy S II and now the numbers prove you do too. Samsung has announced that its Android 2.3 flagship superphone has just hit sales of three million units since its launch in May - just two months ago.

It ain't quite Apple-levels of iPhone hype - the iPhone 4 sold 1.7 million units three days after launch - but it does prove a trend we've been starting to spot: you love other OSes besides Apple.

Our polls show that 75% of 500+ people were planning to buy a Nokia Windows Phone 7 handset, while 81% of the 600 people who answered would buy an Android Honeycomb tablet this year.

Perhaps driving part of that is Samsung's iPad-slender Galaxy Tab 10.1 pipped to launch early next month?

Simon Stanford, Managing Director, Mobile, Samsung UK and Ireland said: "The Galaxy S II is our most advanced smartphone to date and has been a huge hit with customers. This latest sales milestone reflects how devices from our Galaxy range continue to exceed expectations, thanks to a combination of superb hardware, the latest OS and the greatest and most relevant content."
